public art

What is public art?   The term public art properly refers to works of art in any media that has been planned and executed with the specific intention of being sited or staged in the public domain, usually outside and accessible to all. It can be permanent or temporary.  It is site specificity with community involvement and collaboration.  Some forms of public art are designed to encourage audience participation in a hands-on way. It includes, sculpture, murals electronic art, video art, street furniture & murals. The term is sometimes also applied to include any art which is exhibited in a public space including publicly accessible buildings.

Through many hours of research we have found the most comprehensive public art roadmap for Asbury Park to follow would be Seattle’s Public Art Road Map. Partnering with other city departments, we will have our public art structure to work from, through ArtsCAP as well as meet our needs defined in the Cultural Arts Plan that has been developed for Asbury Park.  Our goals, through artscap’s public art committee are to:

  • Public Art Policy/ help to create
  • Asbury Mural Arts Project/ subcommittee to be established.
  • Create and facilitate other forms of public art, Sculpture, sidewalk art, etc.
  • Create database and open lines of communication with/ of organizations within Asbury Park, public artists, all public spaces.
  • Create a database and documentation of all existing public art within the city.
  • Create and facilitate Temporary Public Art for events.
