THE GHOST OF STEPHAN CRANE IN THREE SOUNDS

Spooky, distant world, maybe my own
boyhood, maybe inside a demented man's mind, maybe
a flower's thoughts, or maybe the remains of a dog
I owned when I was five years old.

No sound, silence, aha! There it is,
here it is, water, hollow, shells over my ears,
Grandma Genevieve in Bayonne blessing me,
or maybe the horror of an MRI, now voices
saying maybe shouldn't be writing, maybe
my ears are dead.

Jet and birds on the bottom of the world,
Crane's disembodied imagination, as
if he broke through silent space,
no voice, no body, here to say,
"Why are you people scribbling in
my dining room?  Why aren't you
having a feast with wine and rum?
